PHOTOGRAPHED

IN DARKNESS

For more than 45 years, Bree has been drawn to the world thru photography, looking beyond the obvious to discover the character, history, and quiet poetry held within the world around her. Her practice is rooted in observation and curiosity, drawn to subjects that reveal themselves through light, texture, structure, and time.

Bree moves beyond capturing existing light and begins to create it. Vintage and antique objects are carefully positioned and photographed in darkness, selectively painted with light during a long exposure. The process is deliberate and highly intuitive. Light is moved across the subject to reveal particular surfaces, edges, textures, and imperfections, allowing some elements to emerge while others remain in shadow. The resulting photograph is not simply a record of the object—it is an interpretation of it, a relationship between light,

Bree’s photographs ask you to pause - notice the overlooked. These works aim to evoke a sense of nostalgia, curiosity, wonder and quiet discovery – but also to remind us that beauty does not always reside in something new. Sometimes it is found in what has endured.
